Paper Bear 2009

The young woman standing in front of the camera, wearing brown tights and silky shirt, is both dressed and undressed. She's holding a stuffed paper bear mask to her face with both hands, her figure is sketched through the shadow projected on the white rectangular wall behind her.
Berlowitz uses her unique language to expand an infinitesimal moment in which she sustains a scope of self from which a complex notion of identity emerges.
This still photographs correspond to the video work "Paper Bear", echoing it though not derived from it. They do not freeze or duplicate a moment from the video, as customary or expected, but rather reinforce and expand it, serving to the video that ends unexpectedly, as an end note.
